The M1911 (or simply 1911) is a semi-automatic, high powered handgun. It was designed by John Brown for Colt, its initial manufacturer, in the 1980s as a replacement for the United States armed forces. It was successfully adopted in 1911, and remained in service for over fifty years, when it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1986. However, it has not been completed phased out, as military organizations continue to use it throughout the world.
Due to its reliability and easy customization, The 1911 has become one of the most popular handguns on the civilian market. Contracts were given to other manufacturing companies in order to meet the high demands made during World War I and II. In 1924, the design was given a small update, and was produced as the 1911A1 in order to distinguish it from its older counterpart. Many other guns have had their designs influenced by the 1911, making it the most dominant for handguns in the 20th century.
The 1911 was designed to fire .45 ACP cartridges, a new caliber which was also designed by John Brown, and released around the same time. The gun was also available for .38 ACP, however many clones have since been released which utilize other ammunition. The most popular of these being in 9mm and 10mm.
The 1911 appears as a low tier weapon, most frequently as the default weapon players start with. Despite its moderate damage, the firing rate is considerably slower than most guns in its category.
